Schinkel Academy Berlin
Berlin/2018
"Form does not follow function. Form follows vision. Vision follows reality" (F. Kiesler)
Starting point of the Schinkel Academy (Internationale Bauakademie Berlin) is the emergence of something new. Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Bauakademie set a revolutionary example 180 years ago – not only for Prussian Berlin, but also for the education of architects. Starting point for the new Academy is also the history of the place with its multiple destructions and reconstructions. The vision for the new Academy evolves along the following parameters:
- Strengthening the understanding of architecture within the society is as important as strengthening the understanding of society within the education of architects.
- The imaginary layers of the place are as important as the actual ones.
- Newly built spaces in a city like Berlin must not be empty or unused at any time. If it cannot be used permanently by one institution, it has to be occupied alternately by multiple stakeholders.
- The programs of the Academy should define the building, not the other way round. Changing programs = adaptable architecture.
- All elements that are not necessarily static are modular or dynamic.
- The aim of the new Academy is to trigger new ways of thinking and doing architecture.
- Mission: Development of a masterplan including concept, organisational scheme and space allocation program of the new Academy
- Client: Federal State Ministry of the Interior
- Year: 2018
